What is IOP For Addiction?

What Is IOP For Addiction

JC Treatment Center offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for individuals suffering from substance abuse. This level of care is recommended for individuals who need a transitional level of care after completing a residential program, in addition to individuals looking to supplement their recovery. Our intensive outpatient program meets 3 to 5 days weekly for approximately 3 hours daily.

What happens in an Intensive Outpatient Program?

While in an IOP program, clients visit our addiction treatment center several hours a day, three to five days a week. Our IOP is more intensive than our outpatient program because patients spend time attending therapy, support groups, or clinical services. However, unlike residential treatment, patients do not have to live at our treatment center.

While in IOP treatment, patients participate in:

  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Support Groups
  • Mental Health Services
  • Relapse Prevention Courses
  • Coping Strategy Courses

JC Treatment offers flexible therapy times in both the mornings and evenings. Clients spend most of their time in the therapies listed above while also accessing other treatment services we offer, such as holistic therapies.

Our intensive outpatient programs are custom tailored for each person. At JC Treatment, we understand that each individual’s needs and goals are unique, so their treatment needs to be too.

What is the Difference between Partial Hospitalization Services and IOP Treatment?

The main difference between partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) is the time commitment. PHP is more intensive than IOP, as this type of outpatient treatment services clients who require a higher level of care than intensive outpatient treatment can offer, though not as rigorous as residential treatment. Clients attending a PHP program undergo treatment services and clinical monitoring throughout the day. At night, they go home to their families.

This is similar to our intensive outpatient program. However, intensive outpatient has become more popular because of its affordability, flexibility, and convenience. Both IOP and PHP give patients the freedom to go home and maintain their normal routine outside of treatment.

How long do I need to be in IOP for addiction?

Once we assess your needs and determine if you are the right fit for an IOP program, our clinical team will craft an individualized treatment plan catered to your personal recovery goals. Following this, you will attend treatment 3-5 days weekly for approximately 3 hours a day.

The amount and length of time you attend our IOP program for addiction will depend on your progress, medical needs, and unique situation. Generally, patients attend IOP for 8-10 weeks on average. However, studies show that individuals who attend treatment for longer periods have more successful outcomes.

While in IOP for addiction, you will participate in various therapies each week. Your time will likely be divided between individual, group, and family therapy led by a highly-trained licensed therapist. Other services offered during IOP include relapse prevention and holistic modalities.

Am I a Good Candidate for Intensive Outpatient Treatment or a Higher Level of Care Such as Residential Treatment?

Picking the right substance abuse treatment program can be overwhelming. You will find that most programs offer similar services, such as group therapy, family therapy, and more. Therefore, what truly matters when picking your program is your schedule and level of addiction.

Most start their journey faced with the decision between inpatient and outpatient treatment. Inpatient treatment generally is for patients who require a higher amount of medical attention. This level of care gives clients on-site 24/7 access to medical support and facility amenities. That said, an inpatient treatment facility can be intensive, and some clients find that an inpatient program does not suit their lifestyle.

Since our intensive outpatient program (IOP) caters to myriad functions, individuals in any stage of their recovery can benefit from participating in this addiction treatment program. We service clients transitioning from residential treatment as well as those in the early stages of recovery.

  • You have completed a residential program or partial hospitalization program. The pressure of going from a structured setting to the freedom of being home can jeopardize your healing. With intensive outpatient treatment, clients can gradually transition back o normal life.
  • You suffer from less severe addiction or mental illness. If you know you need help with your addiction but haven’t reached a breaking point, an intensive outpatient program is a great alternative to inpatient treatment.
  • You have a good support system. Since you won’t have round-the-clock medical support while participating in an IOP, you’ll need a good support system at home. An IOP is an excellent alternative to residential treatment if your family is educated on addiction and can assist you in maintaining a sober and secure environment at home.
  • You are a parent or working professional. Outpatient treatment allows clients to maintain much of their regular routine. The flexibility of IOP allows patients to attend addiction treatment while managing other responsibilities such as being a parent or working professional.

It is best to be fully assessed by a qualified professional—a therapist, addiction counselor, or psychiatrist when deciding whether a residential treatment or intensive outpatient program is proper for you.
