Long-Lasting recovery from addiction
What is Relapse Prevention?
Why is Relapse Prevention Important?
What are Common Relapse Triggers?
Overcoming drug or alcohol addiction is no easy task. Many individuals in recovery will tell you that post-acute withdrawal symptoms are the most challenging aspect of addiction recovery. The most common addiction relapse triggers to look out for are emotional, mental, and environmental triggers. These include:
– The presence of alcohol or drugs
– Perceived negative emotions
– Stress, overconfidence in recovery
– Mental illness
– Peer pressure
– Boredom
– Isolation
Everyone will likely experience a trigger at some point in their recovery process. It’s important to understand that one person’s trigger may not be the same as the next person’s. Preparation goes a long way to preventing relapse, especially when you find yourself in high-risk situations and the negative consequences can be life-threatening. During your treatment program, you will learn to identify your unique internal and external triggers while learning healthy coping strategies that you can use to prevent relapse.
How Does JC Treatment Center Approach Relapse Prevention?
JC Treatment Center considers relapse prevention a single component of a complete treatment program. We incorporate relapse prevention techniques in conjunction with other treatment modalities, including individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and medical support. We encourage our patients to:
– Practice self-care
– Attend our support groups
– Practice relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness meditation and our
– Utilize deep breathing technique
– Incorporate physical exercise into their routines to increase endorphins
While in one of our treatment programs, our highly trained and experienced team is dedicated to crafting a relapse prevention plan that will help you acquire the coping skills you need to prevent relapse altogether. As with other addiction treatment programs, there is no one specific route to take when crafting a relapse prevention plan. Instead, we’ll determine the most effective relapse prevention therapy based on your unique situation.
Perception and Progress
Our relapse prevention program is based on two foundational principles: perception and process. Perception refers to how the individual views the world and how this perception impacts their feelings and actions. During relapse prevention, our treatment team works to challenge our patient’s perceptions so they can start to make healthy decisions on their own following treatment.
The other principle our relapse prevention program is based on is process. We view relapse as a process and encourage our patients to do the same. The premise of this principle is that relapse occurs long before drug use actually happens. When patients understand this, they’ve acquired a helpful relapse prevention skill since they can learn to recognize any signs that may indicate a risk of relapse.
The team at JC Treatment Center believes that accountability is paramount in recovery. We encourage loved ones to support patients and safeguard their sobriety during and after addiction treatment.
